History

Chana power plant is accounted in Thailand’s Power Development Plan year 2004-2015, to support increasing electricity demand from economic and industrial growth and also to develop reliability of electric supply on Southern region. Chana power plant is located on a 306.4 acre area beside state highway no. 43, between Km. 58-59, in the area of Ban Pa Ching, Ampha Kor Maong (Moo 1), Tombon Pa Ching, and the area of Ban Kwang Hua Chang (Moo 6), Tombon Klong Pea, Ampha Chana, Songkha province. Chana power plant is a high efficiency combined cycle power plant with installed capacity of 731 MW, using natural from Joint Development Area (JDA), between Thailand and Malaysia. About 130 million cubic feet of natural gas per day will be supplied from the Gulf of Thailand via pipelines at almost 7.46 km long. Chana combined cycle power in 1 unit is consisted of 2 gas turbines at installed capacity of 242 MW, a heat recover steam generator (HRSG) and a steam turbine which combined capacity of 248 MW.

Becoming Chana power plant

Chana power plant project has entitled step by step from land procurement, social community relationship, study of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), Biding preparation, purchasing, design, production, equipments transportation, installation of gas turbine, steam turbine, electric equipments and control system and testing.

Chana power plant conducted EIA’s study on 18 June 2004, and the National Environment Board decided to agree with the report on 19 April 2005. After that National Economic and Development Board (NESBD) considered to support the project on 28 April 2005 and the Cabinet approved the project on 7 June 2005. Later EGAT began the construction and able to commercially supply electricity into the system on 15 July 2008.

 

Social community cooperation

The Community always being a part to cooperate with Chana power plant even before the project started. The community played a vital role in public hearing, setting regulations in EIA, and all through processes during project construction. All third parties, including the Community, Board of Director and Working team, which have totally 5 groups as following;

  1. Monitoring Committee to inspect the procedure and environmental development of the Community
  2. Working team to consider community development plan ( Chana’s district-chief officer as a chairman)
  3. Working team to inspect water pumping from Po Ma canal and quality of waste water discharge to Bang Ped canal (Chana’s honorable assistance district officer as a chairman)
  4. Chana power plant’s Environmental assessment team (No.16 Environment Office Director as a chairman)
  5. Environmental volunteering( 4 persons from EGAT and 4 persons from community)

All of the 5 groups both in the committee and working teams are gathered from savants, sage villagers and community’s representative.

 

What’s Chana power plant return to the Community?

During the construction, EGAT allocated the budget of 5.1 million baht every year to develop quality of life in the Community. The Community, areas covered Tombon Klong Pea, Pa Ching, Paling Chan, Na Tub and Pa Noeng, received the yearly budget of 500,000 baht and the outer area of 9 Tombons received 280,000 baht. The Community will propose and manage their own projects such as purchase of education equipments, computers, teaching religion’s remuneration, child center building, Public Park, repair Mosque, etc.

Promote and develop métier that suitable for local resource within the Community which will make sustainable in the long run such as making of birdcage from Bang Klong Hua Cheng, making of shrimp paste from a group of housewife in Tombon Na Tub.

Other than that million of aquatic animals will released to the water yearly, scholarship, Wan Keo Project, Mobilize doctor, Youth camp and other public support activities.
